Norfolk Southern opened the center to serve residents who have incurred loss, inconvenience, personal injury or property damage as a result of the railroad accident Jan. 6 at Graniteville, S.C. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 7 and Jan. 8. The center will be open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 9. The center may be open additional hours next week, as needed. Residents who come to the center can speak with Norfolk Southern officials. Representatives of the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health, as well as medical personnel, including a physician, psychologist and nurses, also are at the center to respond to questions and concerns from the public. The Local Assistance Center is located at the First Presbyterian Church, 224 Barnwell Ave. N.W., in Aiken. Residents should bring identification, such as a driver's license, and proof of residence. Some 500 residents have taken advantage of center services to date.
